OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A family dog attacked an 8-year-old Omaha girl this weekend, leading her brother to fatally shoot the 100-pound Rottweiler, police and Nebraska Humane Society officials said.
Police received a call about an aggressive dog on Sunday afternoon in the Florence community in northeast Omaha, television station KETV reported. Arriving officers found the girl outside a home with injuries to her arm and the dog shot dead.
The man who shot the dog had a conceal carry permit and was protecting the girl, police said. The dog’s owner, Amy Holmes, said the dog was well-known and well-liked in the neighborhood and believes it was trying to play with the girl.
“It’s just heart-wrenching to know that he had to die this way,” Holmes said. “We’re feeling a lot of guilt, too. Obviously even though he wasn’t the type of dog to hurt anybody, we also understand he was a 100-pound Rottweiler. He looks very scary, and if you didn’t know who he was and he surprised you, that would be scary.”
Holmes was cited on suspicion of having an unrestrained dog.
