PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Tens of thousands of Maine customers are back on the power grid on Thursday after heavy winds and rain put many in the state in the dark.

Utilities in the state reported that about 33,000 customers still lacked power on Thursday morning. That was down from a high of more than 120,000 the previous day.

Gusts of up to 40 mph (64 kph) made it difficult for crews to repair lines on Wednesday, but the winds had died down by Thursday.

Some areas of the state, such as Kennebec County in central Maine, still had significant power outages on Thursday. There were more than 7,000 customers still without power on Thursday morning.
