NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) - Authorities on Monday released the name of the Rhode Island woman who died in a kayaking accident last week.
Vickie Medeiros, 61, of Cumberland, died at the hospital on Friday after her kayak overturned in rough waters at the mouth of the Narrow River in Narragansett, the state Department of Environmental Management said in a statement.
Her companion, Regina Treweek, 56, of Cumberland, was treated for hypothermia and released.
The women launched their kayaks at about 8:15 a.m. and made their way downriver. Once they got into the surf zone, they tried turning around and paddling back upriver, the agency said. Treweek, who was ahead, turned around and saw that Medeiros’s kayak had overturned.
The accident remains under investigation.
