NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City police sergeant killed a 44-year-old man who shot a woman and then refused to stop attacking the owner of the Harlem apartment they were in Wednesday night, Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo said.

Police had been responding to a report of shots fired when they found the 45-year-old woman on the ground of the fifth-floor apartment and the men fighting, one of them wielding a kitchen knife, Fausto said.

The man ignored officers orders to drop the knife and was shot in the torso as he attempted to stab the 39-year old man, he said.

Medical personnel pronounced the woman and the man shot by an officer dead at the scene.

The owner of the apartment is in stable condition, Pichardo said.

A 41-year-old woman who was also in the apartment was not injured.

A semiautomatic handgun and a kitchen knife were recovered.
