AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A domestic dispute in a northern Ohio home ended with a woman dead and her daughter facing a murder charge, authorities said.

Akron police went to the home around 1 p.m. Tuesday after a caller from the University of Mount Union reported concerns about Sydney Powell, 19. The caller said he spoke with Powell over the phone and heard “yelling and screaming,” then got no answer when he twice tried to call her back.

When police arrived at the home, they found Brenda Powell, 50, with severe lacerations, while her daughter had minor undisclosed injuries. Both were taken to a hospital, and Brenda Powell was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The Summit County medical examiner said Wednesday she died of multiple sharp and blunt force injuries and ruled the death a homicide.

Sydney Powell remained hospitalized Wednesday, and authorities are still trying to determine how she was injured, though they don’t believe a third person was involved in the incident. It’s not known if she’s retained an attorney.

Authorities have not said what the two women were arguing about.
