LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - A man was found shot to death Sunday morning on a gravel road near a small South Carolina airstrip, authorities said.

Lancaster County deputies found the body about 8:30 a.m., and around 30 minutes later someone reported a car in a ditch blocking part of U.S. Highway 521 near Kershaw about 11 miles (18 kilometers) away, investigators said.

The car belonged to the victim of the shooting and investigators towed it to the sheriff’s office to look for clues, Sheriff Barry Faile said.

The man was found dead near Kirk Air Base. His name was not released. An autopsy was ordered for Monday.

Investigators have uncovered a lot of information and are optimistic they will charge someone soon, Faile said in a statement, and added he would not talk about the evidence to not throw the investigation off track.
