COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina mother has been arrested after her 3-year-old son shot and wounded himself when he found an unsecured gun, authorities said.
Destiny Wise, 22, was charged Wednesday with unlawful conduct toward a child, news outlets reported.
Columbia police said Wise left her son alone in a bedroom within reach of a loaded gun. Police said the toddler picked up the gun and it discharged, shooting him in the head.
The child had surgery and is continuing to show signs of improvement, Police Chief William Holbrook announced.
Wise’s bond was set at $20,000. It’s unclear whether she had an attorney who could comment on her behalf.
