KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Authorites said a Kansas City police officer shot and killed a carjacking suspect Saturday afternoon, and the incident attracted a small group of protesters.

Missouri Highway Patrol spokesman Andy Bell said the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after a brief vehicle and foot pursuit, the Kansas City Star reported. Bell said the officer fired one shot after the man “presented some type of handgun.”

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, according to Kansas City police spokeswoman Doaa El-Ashkar.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the man who was shot was an “adult white male.” Additional details have not yet been released.

The Highway Patrol will investigate the shooting, while the carjacking will be investigated by Kansas City police, Bell said.

After meeting with reporters, Bell and El-Ashkar talked with the group of about a dozen protesters and other community members who gathered at the shooting Saturday. One of the protesters held a sign calling for drivers to “Honk for justice.”

Branden Mims, who is with the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, said it’s important that investigators release their findings in the shooting quickly without waiting months to file a report. Mims visited the shooting scene Saturday. He is also pastor of the Greater Metropolitan Church of Christ.
