CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Some low-lying areas and streets in Iowa were under water Wednesday, following heavy rains Tuesday and overnight.
More than 5 inches (12.7 centimetres) of rain was reported in Oelwein in northeastern Iowa - the highest amount for the state on Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported. The deluge left several roads in Oelwein under water, and flooding closed Iowa Highway 3 west of the city.
Most of Iowa saw between 2 and 4 inches (5 and 10.1 centimetres) of rain with the storms, the weather service said. On the western side of the state in Council Bluffs, storms dropped nearly 3.5 inches (8.9 centimetres) of rain overnight, leaving low-lying streets flooded.
A flood warning remained in effect Wednesday through Saturday for areas along the Cedar River, Turkey River and Black Hawk Creek, the weather service said. Those warnings included the cities of Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Elkader.
A flood watches remained in effect for parts of the state stretching from the southwest corner to east-central Iowa, including the cities of Atlantic, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Dubuque.
