JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas sheriff said he has decided to euthanize one of the department’s police dogs after an “unprovoked vicious attack” on its handler.
Geary County Sheriff Daniel Jackson posted on Facebook the attack Tuesday involving K9 Krew lasted 90 seconds, and that the video he watched showed it was particularly brutal.
Deputy Kalen Robison, who had reached into the dog’s kennel in his patrol car to put a collar on, suffered a torn bicep and multiple puncture wounds requiring 17 stitches.
Since 2018, the dog has also attacked two other K9 officers on three different occasions requiring a total of 54 stitches and the reattachment of a toe, the sheriff wrote.
“After considering all of the options I came to the painful conclusion that Krew would need to be euthanized,” Jackson wrote. “This was not an easy decision but I could not in good conscious allow Krew to be given to another agency for an attempt at retraining. If he attacked another trainer and severely injured that trainer or a member of the public that responsibility would be mine.”
The sheriff also cited the potential liability to the county and the sheriff’s office, saying that is not a risk he is willing to take.
