CARNESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia county deputy was hit by a car and killed Sunday while he was assisting people involved in a crash on an interstate, authorities said.
Franklin County Deputy William Garner died Sunday night on Interstate 85 while on duty, news outlets reported.
Georgia State Police said Garner responded to a crash on I-85 around 7 p.m. and began helping people inside of the crashed car.
The driver of a 2018 Honda Accord traveling southbound lost control of the vehicle, exiting the roadway into the median and striking Garner, who was outside of the patrol car.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Garner was hospitalized but later died of his injuries. He had served with the department for just over a year.
The driver of the Honda Accord was identified as 21-year-old Abdulhafiz Tawfik Abdullahi. He was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle.
It’s unclear whether Abdullahi had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Police said other charges were pending as the investigation continued.
