RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A banking executive was appointed on Friday to the North Carolina Senate, succeeding the retired Sen. Jerry Tillman.

Gov. Roy Cooper formally named Dave Craven to fill out the seat that Tillman vacated on June 30. He’ll serve out the remainder of Tillman’s term through Dec. 31.

State law obligated Cooper to appoint Craven, since he was the choice of Republican activists in Tillman’s 26th Senate District, covering all of Randolph County and part of Guilford County.

Craven is a senior vice president at Fidelity Bank and previously served on the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Senate leader Phil Berger said in a news release.

The legislature is currently scheduled to return to work in early September.

Tillman was the second-ranked senator in terms of seniority in the chamber before his retirement. He first joined the Senate in 2003.

Craven will also replace Tillman as the party’s candidate for the seat in November, party leader Lois Welborn told The High Point Enterprise. Jane Ledwell Gant is the Democratic nominee.
