NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) - Authorities early Monday recovered the body of a 64-year-old Massachusetts man who drowned after going swimming at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said a Narragansett Fire boat recovered the body after it was spotted by the Coast Guard helicopter. He had gone missing late Sunday.

Officials identified the man as Matthew Smith of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Authorities said they received a 911 call around 9 p.m. Sunday that the man had gone missing. Swimming had been restricted to waist-deep at state beaches on Sunday due to strong surf and riptides and lifeguards at Scarborough State Beach had made several rescues that day, officials said.
