ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Times Union of Albany announced that Managing Editor Casey Seiler will become editor of the newspaper.
Seiler succeeds Rex Smith, who is stepping down from his position Feb. 1, the Times Union reported Wednesday.
Seiler joined the Times Union as entertainment editor in 2000. He led the Times Union’s state capitol reporting team and served as senior editor for news before being named managing editor in 2018.
Previously, he worked at the Burlington Free Press in Vermont and the Jackson Hold Guide in Wyoming.
“When I wake up in the morning and I know that I’m coming to work at the Times Union, it is working with this staff today that quickens my step and makes me happy to be coming through the door every day,” Seiler said.
Smith joined the newsroom in 1995 and was named editor in 2002. He will assume the title editor at large and continue overseeing the newspaper’s opinion pages, in addition to writing his weekly column, said the paper’s publisher and CEO George Hearst III.
“He has always been collegial, honest, forthright - not always in agreement - but always a champion for the resources on this side of the business,” Hearst said.
A replacement for the managing editor position has not been announced.
