BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -
The city of Burlington will expands its use of the state VT-Alert system to notify residents about emerging and urgent local issues, Mayor Miro Weinberger said Tuesday.
Residents will be able to sign up for calls, text messages or emails about certain types of urgent alerts such as boil water advisories, major storm preparations, beach closures and snow-related parking bans.
“One of the wonders of the modern world is our capacity for immediate communications, but until now the City lacked the ability to urgently and reliably contact all of our residents,” Weinberger said in a written statement. “I urge all Burlingtonians to sign up for VT-Alert today in order to receive time-sensitive information from the City.”
Burlington had to issue a precautionary boil water advisory last summer in parts of the South End, the mayor’s office said. While the city emailed water customers, send social media notifications and held a press conference call, some residents did not immediately receive the notification, showing that the city needed a stronger notification method, Weinberger’s office said.
Residents can sign up or find out more about the BTV Community Alerts on the city’s website.
