NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police are searching for a suspect who pretended to be a law enforcement officer while trying to steal a man’s car at gunpoint, according to an agency statement.

A dark colored vehicle pulled up beside the 20-year-old victim in a Newark shopping center parking lot on Monday afternoon, the agency said in a news release. The suspect identified himself as a law enforcement officer and ordered the victim to turn over his car. When the victim refused, the suspect threatened him with a handgun, the statement said. The victim was able to drive away unharmed.

The suspect didn’t specify an agency or show a badge, State Police said.
