TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A man who was shot by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper during an arrest attempt has died of his injuries, authorities said Thursday.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation identified the man killed in a news release as 33-year-old Gaston Nava-Saucedo.

The KBI said previously that the shooting happened Wednesday after the driver briefly exited his car during a traffic stop before getting back inside to flee. In an effort to prevent the driver from leaving, the trooper ended up partially inside the car and was dragged.

During the struggle, the trooper fired multiple shots at the driver. The trooper also was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The KBI said it will conduct “a thorough and independent investigation” into the incident and turn over its findings to the Shawnee County district attorney for review.
