PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Northern Light Mercy Hospital has sold its historic State Street property as it prepares to consolidate operations at its new Fore River campus.

Private housing developers purchased the State Street building but Mercy Hospital will continue leasing it until the expected completion of the Fore River campus in 2022. The hospital plans to break ground on the $83.3 million expansion this spring, officials said.

“This sale and campus consolidation will position us for the future and ensure that we are able to carry on the mission of the Sisters of Mercy that began in Portland just over a century ago,” Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital, said in a statement.

As part of the expansion, the hospital will construct a nearly 193,000-square-foot hospital as well as a medical office building and an ambulatory surgery center, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The State Street building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Income from the sale, along with proceeds from a $20 million fundraising campaign, will help pay for the expansion.
