PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Express lanes will be installed at the parking lots at some of Rhode Island’s state beaches, according to state environmental officials.

The new lanes will be installed at five of the state’s eight beaches prior to their official reopening Memorial Day weekend, the Providence Journal reported on Tuesday. Drivers who buy passes in advance will be able to enter the beach parking lot faster through a system similar to an E-ZPass lane.

The beaches are Scarborough North and South, Roger Wheeler in Narragansett, East Matunuck in South Kingstown and Misquamicut in Westerly.

A Connecticut company that was hired to run beach parking operations concluded there isn’t enough room to install lanes at the other three beaches. The company will carry out site inspections this week.
