BOWIE, Md. (AP) - An off-duty Maryland sheriff’s deputy shot at a suspect who was trying to steal a car on Wednesday morning, a police chief confirmed.
Nobody was wounded when the Prince George’s Sheriff’s deputy fired his weapon and the suspect escaped the scene, Bowie Police Chief John Nesky posted on Twitter just before 5:00 a.m.
The Bowie Police Department initially responded to reports that three suspects were pulling on door handles after 1:30 a.m., Nesky told news outlets. Officers arrested two of the suspects after a brief foot chase, but the third got away, he added. That’s when the off-duty deputy, who was nearby at the time, saw someone trying to steal a car in the area, confronted the man and fired at him, the department said.
Bowie police said the suspect matched the description from the attempted break ins earlier that night. The suspect took off in a blue Jeep Compass and hasn’t been found.
Bowie police are investigating the thefts and the Prince George’s Police Department is investigating the deputy’s use of his weapon, news outlets reported.
