BOSTON (AP) - A Boston police officer shot a knife-wielding man in the leg late Monday when the man tried to stab the officer’s partner, police Commissioner William Gross said.
The shooting occurred at about 11:30 p.m. in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood, he said.
The officers were on patrol when they witnessed a fight, he said.
The officers got out of their cruiser, and one of them tried to stop a man with a knife from attacking another man who suffered neck and back wounds.
When one officer tried to break up the fight, the man with the knife tried to stab the officer, Gross said. The officer’s partner then shot the assailant in the thigh.
The man, identified by police Tuesday as Luis Gomes, faces arraignment Wednesday on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
The officers were not hurt.
They applied a tourniquet to the leg of the man who had been shot and both he and the man who was stabbed were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Gross said both men had been stabilized.
