President-elect Joseph R. Biden’s 33-year-old niece has been sentenced to five months of probation in lieu of jail time after pleading guilty to a 2019 DUI charge.
Caroline Biden, the daughter of Mr. Biden’s brother James, was arrested in August 2019 after she crashed her car into a tree in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, the New York Post reported.
A blood test reportedly confirmed she had carisoprodol and lorazepam in her system at the time of the crash.
Ms. Biden reached a plea deal with the Montgomery County District Attorney earlier this month and will serve five months probation instead of jail time, with 20 days in rehab counting toward her sentence, court records show. She also has to pay $1,990 in fines and legal costs and log 12 hours of community service. Her license was suspended for a year and she will have to complete a drug and alcohol awareness program, People reported.
Ms. Biden is no stranger to the courtroom. She was previously convicted in New York after pleading guilty to running a $110,000 credit card scam. In 2013, she was charged with resisting arrest after allegedly assaulting a New York Police Department officer.
