New York Giants offensive coordinator and former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett tested positive for COVID-19, keeping him out of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett was around the team Wednesday, but according to NFL Network, he was not in close enough distance to be considered a close contact. The Giants, however, still closed their facility and won’t practice Thursday.
Giants tight end coach Freddie Kitchens will call the plays in Garrett’s absence. Kitchens, of course, coached the Browns last season, but was fired after a disappointing 6-10 season.
Garrett joined New York this offseason. The Cowboys fired him after failing to reach the playoffs, cutting ties after nine seasons with Garrett at the helm.
The Giants (5-8) desperately need a win Sunday as they are now one game behind Washington (6-7) in the NFC East. The team could also be without quarterback Daniel Jones, who did not practice Wednesday with a lower leg injury.
