LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - Construction has begun to repair a historic dam nearly five years after it broke during the once-in-a-lifetime floods that swept through South Carolina in 2015.

Lexington’s Old Mill Pond has stood empty since the flooding broke the pond’s earthen dam and disrupted nearby businesses.

The dam’s owner has worked with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to create plans for the pond, which include a walking trail, WLTX-TV reported.

The construction, which started this week, is estimated to take about four months.

More than 40 dams across the state failed in the devastating floods that led to 19 deaths and caused about $2 billion in damage.
