CANAAN, Conn. (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in northwestern Connecticut on Sunday, after surveying damage that included destroyed greenhouses and downed trees and utility wires. No injuries were reported.
A tornado with the weakest EF0 rating struck Sharon shortly after 5:30 p.m. with an estimated maximum wind speed of 80 mph (129 kph) and traveled about a quarter-mile (0.4 kilometers), the Weather Service said Monday evening.
The second tornado was rated an EF1 and tore through the Falls Village section of Canaan shortly after 6 p.m. The Weather Service said the maximum wind speed was about 90 mph (145 kph) and it traveled 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers).
The tornadoes developed as powerful thunderstorms moved across the region Sunday evening.
In a Facebook post, Paley’s Farm Market in Sharon said its greenhouses were significantly damaged, but its crops, nursery and market were virtually unscathed.
Scattered power outages had been repaired by Tuesday morning.
