RENO, Nev. (AP) - Washoe County School Board member Scott Kelley has resigned after allegations surrounding his divorce became public and the board chairman urged him to step down.

Kelley, who also works as a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Corrections, said in a statement Thursday he made the decision to resign from his second term “after personal reflection and with a heavy heart.”

Kelley says his name will remain on the ballot in November for possible election to a new term. He says he’s hopeful his constituents “will consider the facts and circumstances surrounding disclosure of the false and inflammatory allegations when casting their vote.”

Pressure to resign stemmed from an article This is Reno published this week detailing allegations made by his wife in court documents, including Kelley putting a GPS tracking device on his wife’s car and admitting to having an extramarital affair with a stripper.

Kelley said in his statement that the “current political climate makes it impossible for me to be viewed as innocent until proven guilty.”

School Board President Malena Raymond said Wednesday if Kelley didn’t resign she would call for a special board meeting next week to discuss his future on the board amid the allegations of misconduct.
