PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The man shot and killed while sitting in a vehicle outside his Providence home over the weekend was the city’s third homicide victim in a little over a week, police said Monday.

Kiovany Diaz, 21, was shot at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday by someone opening fire from a passing vehicle, Maj. David Lapatin said at a news conference.

He was taken to the hospital by family members in the same vehicle. He died of his injuries Sunday afternoon, police said.

No arrests have been announced and the investigation is ongoing.

Diaz’s death was the city’s third homicide in eight days and the eighth of the year.

The recent surge of violence is “concerning,” but the three latest homicides do not appear to be related, Lapatin said.
