RENO, Nev. (AP) - Police responding to a report of battery at a home in Reno said they arrived to find the subject of the call with a single gunshot wound.

The 39-year-old Las Vegas resident was transported to a hospital Sunday where he died of his injuries, the Reno Police Department said. His identity wasn’t released.

Detectives early in the investigation learned the man had been the subject of a report of battery with a deadly weapon, but he left before officers arrived. When he returned looking for his girlfriend, the man confronted the landlord at the apartment complex, and the landlord shot him in self-defense, police said.

Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved as they continue investigating.
