MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling plans to step down from her leadership post later this week.
Shilling announced earlier this month that she won’t seek re-election this fall. She said Tuesday she’ll step down from her leadership position on Friday. She said that given her decision not to run again her caucus would be better served with new leadership.
Shilling’s decision to step down creates a void among Senate Democratic leadership as the party is fighting to recapture the majority in the Senate. Republicans hold a 19-14 advantage in the chamber but three other Democrats - Mark Miller, Dave Hansen and Fred Risser - have announced their retirements in addition to Shilling.
The caucus leader plays a key role in recruiting candidates and coordinating campaigns. Shilling’s spokeswoman, Kate Constalie, said Democrats plan to choose a new leader in a virtual meeting sometime later this week.
The assistant minority leader is Janet Bewley of Mason. Aide Joseph Hoey said Bewley is considering running for the top spot.
