SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Peterson named a health care advocate as his running mate.
Peterson announced Monday he has chosen Karina Brown of Nibley to share the ticket with him, The Deseret News reports.
Nibley helped sponsor a 2018 Medicaid expansion ballot initiative known as Proposition 3 and has run for the state House of Representatives.
“Her public service to people in need, her leadership on recent successful ballot measures and her experience in rural small business development make her the right choice for our state,” Peterson said.
Peterson, a University of Utah law professor, is considered an authority on consumer protection and has published books on consumer law and predatory lending.
Brown cited their common background of advocacy work.
“His work in consumer protection and my success in helping to expand health care coverage will resonate with Utahns across the state,” Brown said.
Several candidates are competing in a crowded field to replace Republican Gov. Gary Herbert, who is not running again.
On the GOP side, candidates include former U.S.-Russia ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr., Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox and Ex-GOP chair Thomas Wright.
Peterson is among six Democrats in the race including Neil Hansen, Ryan Jackson, Zachary Moses, Nikki Pino, and Archie Williams III.
