PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine man who ran from the scene of an alleged assault and jumped into a cove has died, authorities said.

The 25-year-old man was the subject of a call to police about a woman being assaulted in Portland Sunday afternoon, Lt. Robert Martin said. Officers located the man on the Back Cove running path and saw him jump into the water.

A fire department rescue boat pulled the man from the water. He was treated on scene and transported to the Maine Medical Center where he died.

The alleged assault victim was determined to be the man’s girlfriend, Martin said. The 24-year-old woman was released from the hospital after treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

An individual who witnessed the alleged assault and tried to help the woman was also assaulted but did not require hospitalization.
