MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - A Berkeley County lawmaker has died.
County spokeswoman Hannah Moldenhauer says Councilman Kevin Cox died early Friday. He was 55.
The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Councilman Tommy Newell says Cox was a tough politician who, like him, asked hard questions. He says he’s shocked by his death and will miss him.
The Post and Courier reports a special election will be called to fill the seat Cox has held since 2017. The district covers most of the city of Hanahan. Director of Voter Registration and Elections Adam Hammons says qualifying will run Oct. 11 through Oct. 19. A primary election will be held Dec. 10. The general election would be Feb. 11.
Cox is survived by his wife, three daughters and two granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
