BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Montana church members have begun restoring the church building after unknown assailants broke into, ransacked and damaged the property.

The Billings Gazette reports that the Christ the King Lutheran Church was left with slashed banners, broken windows and fire extinguisher residue covering the entire sanctuary in white powder last week.

Church officials say they are estimating about $50,000 in repairs after a week of restoration and holding service on part of the church property Sunday.

Pastor Ryan Wendt says he believes someone, or multiple people, broke into the building either Sept. 17 or Sept. 18.

The Billings Police Department says the motive is unclear and suspect or suspects have not been identified.

Police say they hope to recover security camera footage from a DVR that was damaged in the incident.
