BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A man charged with fatally shooting another man outside a Connecticut grocery store says he acted in self-defense.

The Connecticut Post reports that 27-year-old Richard Brown has been charged with first-degree manslaughter in the Sept. 1 death of 41-year-old Jose Perez-Ortiz.

Police say surveillance video shows Brown and three friends confronting Perez-Ortiz in front of La Patona Grocery in Bridgeport.

Police say Perez-Ortiz pulled a knife and attempted to stab Brown in the back. Brown reportedly turned around and fired a handgun at Perez-Ortiz.

Perez-Ortiz was shot in the torso and pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital.

Brown’s lawyer requested a reduced bond because his client acted in self-defense.

Brown’s bail was set at $1.25 million Tuesday because he is on probation and has a pending domestic violence case.
