FENTON, N.Y. (AP) - About 80 homes have been evacuated after a tractor trailer carrying compressed natural gas overturned on an upstate New York highway.

Officials say 52-year-old truck driver Jeffrey Lind died after the vehicle crashed north of Binghamton on Interstate 88 around 1 a.m. Monday. Police say the Hallstead, Pennsylvania man swerved to avoid a deer.

The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports residents in about 80 nearby homes were evacuated during the cleanup. The Chenango Valley Central School District and Chenango Forks Central School District are closed Monday due to the crash.

State transportation officials closed part of the interstate for several hours.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder said the area should be deemed safer by Monday afternoon.
