INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Zoo plans to use two tracts of newly acquired land for parking and to free up space for new exhibits of its menagerie.
Zoo officials recently secured two parcels totaling 26½ acres as part of an agreement with Indianapolis developer Ambrose Property Group. That company dropped its plans last month for a $1.4 billion mixed-use project on the site of a former General Motors Co. stamping plant.
Zoo officials say Ambrose donated 10 acres, while the zoo purchased another 16½ acres.
The new acreage will allow the zoo and White River Gardens to expand their existing 67 acres.
Both parcels are expected to be turned into permanent parking, freeing up space for new exhibits of some of the zoo’s 1,300 animals representing 213 species.
