CLEVELAND (AP) - A former suburban Cleveland mayor and campaign treasurer for U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce has been sentenced to 30 days in jail with work privileges for the theft of $160,000 from the Bainbridge Township Republican’s campaign.
Cleveland.com reports 58-year-old Scott Coleman, of Highland Heights, could have faced 18 months in prison at sentencing Wednesday in Geauga (jee-AW’-guh) County. Coleman pleaded guilty in early September to a felony grand theft charge and provided a $342,000 check to repay the stolen funds and the campaign’s cost for investigative fees and correcting campaign filings.
Defense attorney Ian Friedman said Coleman has shown remorse and that his behavior was a “complete departure.” Friedman wouldn’t say why Coleman took the money.
Coleman was the mayor of Highland Heights from 2004 until he resigned in February.
