PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A petition calling on the state of Rhode Island to do more to fight climate change has been delayed.
In September 2018, a group called Nature’s Trust Rhode Island filed a petition urging the state’s Department of Environmental Management to cut emissions. The group represents 13 young Rhode Island residents.
The Providence Journal reports that Superior Court Judge Melissa Darigan said Monday that the court needs to determine if it has jurisdiction before the case can proceed.
She says a hearing could be scheduled for early next year.
Peter Nightingale, a University of Rhode Island professor who is advising Nature’s Trust, says he sees it as another year that “has gone by without action.”
The department declined to comment.
