Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday he expects recently acquired defensive end Michael Bennett to join the team on the sideline for the playing of the national anthem instead of staying in the locker room.
With the Patriots, Bennett opted not to join his teammates on the sideline during the pregame anthem. The 33-year-old is passionate about social justice causes and has taken a knee in the past to protest racial inequality.
Last week, the Patriots traded Bennett to the Cowboys after his role was diminished in New England. Bennett was coming off a suspension for getting into an argument with his position coach.
Asked Tuesday abut Bennett’s history with the anthem, Garrett said he doesn’t “anticipate that being an issue.”
