CLEVELAND (AP) - A bishop who formerly led the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland has died at the age of 72.

The diocese said in a statement that the Most Rev. Richard Lennon died Tuesday morning. It didn’t give a cause of death.

The statement says the bishop emeritus was installed as the diocese’s 10th bishop in 2006. He retired in 2016 citing health reasons.

Lennon was succeeded by current Cleveland Bishop Nelson Perez. Perez said Tuesday that Lennon had a “tremendous love of the Church and the people he shepherded.”

Eight northeastern Ohio counties are included in the diocese.

The diocese says Lennon was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, and served in the Archdiocese of Boston as a parish priest and in several other capacities before becoming an auxiliary bishop there in 2001.
