BERLIN, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Agency of Transportation is using drones as part of a statewide emergency preparedness exercise designed around mock flooding from a catastrophic tropical storm.

In the three-day exercise that ends Friday, the agency is using drones that can allow officials to monitor roadways from an incident command center located, for the exercise, in Berlin.

Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn told the Times Argus part of the system being tested is a new piece of software that allows the state to project damage estimates in real time.

The agency’s rail and aviation director, Dan Delabruere, says the agency hopes to have four drones by the end of the year. Two will likely be stationed in Montpelier, one in Rutland and one at the Lydonville airport.
