CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Appalachian Power is reporting thousands of power outages in West Virginia as hard winds batter the state.
The utility company says nearly 22,000 customers in West Virginia are experiencing outages Wednesday afternoon.
The outages come as the National Weather Service is issuing wind advisories for dozens of counties and high wind warnings for multiple areas throughout the state. Gusts of up to 60 mph are expected through Wednesday night.
Kanawha County Commission President W. Kent Carper is warning residents to be careful when going outside.
The weather service says the winds should slow to 10 to 20 mph by Thanksgiving Day.
