MONTIPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont lawmakers are working on a statewide mandate for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Democratic Rep. Tim Briglin says it is time for the state to “find the accountability that’s going to move us down the path of reduction.”
Vermont Public Radio reports that the state passed carbon reduction goals in 2008, but there is no legal requirement to meet them.
Briglin says state legislators in Maine, Massachusetts and New York have passed laws that mandate reduction and the results have been “pretty impressive.”
Briglin says that Vermont will likely use a centralized council of state agencies and climate experts to develop rules and regulations to reach the states emission goals.
