PITTSBURGH (AP) - A former Pennsylvania police chief who pleaded guilty to stealing heroin from his department’s evidence room has avoided jail time.
WPXI-TV reports that Tim Butler was sentenced Wednesday to 45 months of probation and 325 hours of community service.
Butler is the former police chief of Elizabeth in Allegheny County, a small town near Pittsburgh.
Butler pleaded guilty in August to theft, possession and obstruction. He was charged last year after police found more than 62 bundles and 2,700 loose bags of heroin in Butler’s trash can.
More was found in his desk.
Butler had agreed to a plea deal which saw charges against of him of stealing parking meter money dropped.
The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office said Butler confessed to another officer he was addicted to heroin.
