PHOENIX (AP) - A utility cooperative in the Phoenix area has announced plans to boost its solar power battery storage as part of a pledge to add 1,000 megawatts to its supply by 2025.
Salt River Project announced plans to add a new 250-megawatt project called Sonoran Energy Center with storage near Buckeye by June 2023.
A megawatt could supply power for about 250 homes at once.
The Arizona Republic reported that utilities are adding batteries to the power grid so that they can charge with abundant solar energy in the day and discharge that power at night.
Utility executives say these plants would allow them to reduce carbon emissions and provide clean energy to customers while optimizing energy output.
Officials say solar battery expansions would also lead to lower customer utility bills.
