SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A police chief scolded California lawmakers while honoring an officer whose slaying entered the national immigration debate last year.
Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson said Monday that policies coming from the Capitol are making things more difficult for officers, though he did not elaborate.
His comments came as he praised Cpl. Ronil Singh, an immigrant from Fiji who was fatally shot after Christmas. Authorities say the gunman was in the country illegally and preparing to flee to Mexico. Singh had come to the United States legally.
President Donald Trump cited Singh’s killing in calling for tougher border security. The shooting reignited a debate over California’s sanctuary law that limits cooperation by local authorities and federal immigration authorities.
Richardson’s remarks came during a peace officers’ memorial ceremony.
