PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The former general manager of a Philadelphia U-Haul operation has been sentenced to two years’ probation on charges stemming from an investigation into a food truck explosion that killed a woman and her teenage daughter almost five years ago.
Thirty-one-year-old Miguel Rivera and U-Haul Co. of Pennsylvania denied having filled the propane cylinder of La Parrillada Chapina food truck that ruptured in July 2014, killing 42-year-old Olga Galdamez and her 17-year-old daughter Jaylin.
Prosecutors earlier dismissed charges related to the deaths and to alleged filling of out-of-date tanks. Rivera and the company pleaded guilty to using untrained workers.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Rivera said he “made a terrible mistake.” Defense attorney Michael Engle said the violations were unrelated to the explosion and “did not ultimately lead to any tragedy.”
