HONOLULU (AP) - A Honolulu police official says the chief’s wife was concerned her uncle committed financial abuse against her grandmother.

Deputy Chief John McCarthy testified Friday in the trial against now-retired chief Louis Kealoha and his wife Katherine, a former deputy city prosecutor. They’re accused of framing her uncle for stealing their mailbox to silence him from revealing fraud that financed the couple’s lavish lifestyle.

McCarthy says Katherine Kealoha texted him in 2013, requesting a meeting. She was nervous and carried a box of documents. He says it looked like she controlled an account shared with her grandmother.

McCarthy says Kealoha left when he said he would seek the originals.

He says she never mentioned she reported her mailbox stolen two days earlier and that she identified her uncle as a suspect.
