The Wizards’ No. 1 choice for their general manager vacancy won’t be joining them.Â
Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly turned down an offer to join the Wizards, ESPN reported Monday. Washington had offered Connelly, a Baltimore native with strong roots to Wizards, the job on Friday.Â

Connelly began his career with Washington, first serving as an intern. He was promoted to various roles until he left the franchise to become the New Orleans Pelicans’ assistant general manager in 2010.Â
Connelly has worked for the Nuggets since 2013. In that time, Denver has built one of the NBA’s most promising young cores. The Nuggets are coming off a season in which they won 54 games and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
Washington will now shift its attention to other candidates. They have interviewed Oklahoma City’s Troy Weaver, former Atlanta general manager Danny Ferry and acting general manager Tommy Sheppard for the job.Â
Connelly had been impressed with Leonsis’ vision for franchise, but Denver’s Josh Kroenke made an aggressive case to keep Connelly once Wizards extended an offer over weekend, per sources. Major coup for Denver. https://t.co/Bms0TdTLkJ
