SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says a Sparks man fatally shot by Sparks police responding to a report of a possible domestic battery Sunday was armed with a rifle during the encounter.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the shooting occurred late Sunday after 47-year-old Jose Dominguez barricaded himself within his residence and then after an hour of negotiations came out armed with a rifle.

The statement said “the situation then escalated” without elaborating on circumstances leading to the shooting.

According to the statement, the incident began about 90 minutes after Sparks police responded to an earlier report involving Dominguez.

That report said Dominguez was suicidal and intoxicated but that police at the time determined that Dominguez was not suicidal and no crime had been committed
